Mission
The ILO-net is the collaboration of Dutch Industrial Liaison Officers who are employed at the scientific research institutes in the Netherlands. The ILO-net is an initiative of the NWO institutes, with a coordinating responsibility for national contributions to Big Science facilities like ESA, ESO, CERN and ITER. NWO supports this initiative with a back office at corporate level.
ILO’s join their forces to connect Dutch high tech industry with Big Science, with the aim to raise geographical return and to support high tech industry in the acquisition of challenging science/technology contracts. Several stakeholders are involved in the ILO-net activities, a.o. branch organizations of industry and the ministries of Economic Affairs and Science and Education.
Main tasks of the ILO-net are;
- Focused distribution of Calls for Tender to high tech companies, and support the tender process
- Promotion of cooperation between companies, both national and international
- Participation in Industrial Fairs and exhibitions at the occasion of scientific assemblies, by organizing a joint company booth
- Holland Branding; promotion of high tech Dutch companies involved in Big Science
- Maintaining a website, issue a regular newsletter and organize meetings
Vision
The Netherlands are spending more than a hundred million euros each year to large international scientific infrastructures. Performing Big Science is only possible through international collaborations of long duration. On top of the revenues for science, high tech companies profit from the national investments.
Big Science is considered as a crucial activity in this respect. High tech companies are challenged to perform at the highest technical levels. Moreover, knowledge and expertise are exchanged in the intensive collaboration between science and industry.
Ambition
The ILO-network wants to act as the national counterpart and centre of expertise for the support of high tech companies who want to be involved in Big Science activities. ILO-net considers itself as part of the joint European efforts to connect science with industry. As a result the geographical return of Dutch investments in Big Science facilities should be significantly improved.
Missie
Voor het verleggen van grenzen in de wetenschap zijn grootschalige onderzoeksfaciliteiten onontbeerlijk. Nederland besteedt jaarlijks meer dan honderd miljoen euro aan de ontwikkeling, bouw en het onderhoud van deze faciliteiten, die alleen in internationaal verband kunnen worden gerealiseerd. De kennis en vaardigheden in het high tech bedrijfsleven zijn daarbij in toenemende mate van belang. Big Science ontwikkelt zich tot een markt waarin wetenschappelijke eisen leiden tot projecten waarin van het bedrijfsleven steeds het technisch hoogst haalbare wordt gevraagd. Dit leidt tot een krachtige vorm van innovatie.
Het ILO-net is een samenwerkingsverband van Nederlandse Industrial Liaison Officers (ILO’s) die verbonden zijn aan wetenschappelijke instituten. Zij hebben hun krachten gebundeld om de verbinding te onderhouden met het Nederlandse high tech bedrijfsleven op de markt van Big Science.
Het ILO-net is een initiatief vanuit de NWO-instituten die fungeren als thuisbasis voor de deelname aan grootschalige onderzoeksfaciliteiten, welke beschikbaar komen via o.m. ESA, ESO, CERN en ITER. NWO ondersteunt dit initiatief in de vorm van een centraal back-office.
De activiteiten van het ILO-net zijn er op gericht om de geografische return te verbeteren, co-development te bevorderen, en een bijdrage te leveren aan spin-off en valorisatie. Dit gebeurt door middel van;
- gerichte distributie van Calls for Tender onder bedrijven, de begeleiding en het volgen hiervan;
- Nederlandse bedrijven onderling met elkaar, en met bedrijven uit andere landen in contact brengen;
- deelname aan industriële tentoonstellingen bij congressen met gezamenlijke beursstands, in binnen- en buitenland;
- “holland branding”: promoten van Nederlandse bedrijven in de markt van Big Science;
- onderhoud van een website, het organiseren van bijeenkomsten, en de uitgave van een bedrijvenbrochure.
Het ILO-netwerk wil zich in Europees verband ontwikkelen tot een nationaal aanspreekpunt en expertisecentrum voor de verbinding tussen onderzoeksinstituten en de high tech bedrijven die willen acteren op de Big Science markt. Het ILO-net wil daarmee bereiken dat investeringen in Big Science ook ten goede komen aan orders voor onze nationale industrie, en zo doende bijdragen aan co-development en innovatie.
